The Kingdom of the East

The East Kingdom is the second oldest kingdom of the SCA Knowne World, proceeded by the West and followed by the Middle, after which, newer kingdoms came up with slightly more creative names. 

The East Kingdom was founded in NYC around April, 1968, and it spread from there. NYC was referred to as the Capital Province until March, 1972, when it was briefly called Two Rivers (which bounced). By Royal Edict, it became the Nameless Province in November, 1972, to encourage getting a real name. Around June, 1973 Sir Garanhir of Ness coined the name "Estgard"--"Eastern City"--analogous to Miklegard (sp?) ("Big City"), which is what the Norse called Constantinople. Another early member, Sir Eiolf Eriksson, convinced the populace that a more accurate Old Norse rendering of the name would be "Østgarðr" ('east city,' again with the fitting but rather uncreative; some say if spelled 'Ostgard' it means 'cheese-farm' and this has, of course, lead to predictable silliness). Østgarðr is now a Crown Province, territory held directly from the Crown of the East, hence why it ranks senior of all other baronies and its heads hold the titles Viceroy and Vicereine. 

Former principalities of the East, now kingdoms, include Atlantia, Drachenwald and Aethelmearc.
